Poor Sequencing on the Mound: How to Get a Young Pitcher's Body in Order
If your young pitcher looks athletic but the ball comes out soft, or he lights up the bullpen and can't repeat it in a game, the problem is usually sequencing. These pitching sequencing drills fix the order his body fires in, which is where velocity and command actually come from.
What is poor sequencing in pitching?
A good delivery is a chain. The lower half moves first and builds momentum toward the plate, the hips fire, the torso rotates behind them, and the arm is last to unload, whipping through with everything the body already created. When those pieces fire in that order, each one adds to the last. That is sequencing.
Poor sequencing is when that order breaks. The hips open before the front foot lands, the torso spins with the hips instead of trailing them, or the arm tries to do the job the lower half skipped. The energy that should stack up the chain leaks out instead. The result is a pitcher who works hard and gets little back: below his velocity, spraying the zone, and often sore.
How do I know if my pitcher is out of sequence?
- He rushes down the mound. The upper half tips toward the plate before the lower half has built any momentum, so everything arrives early and out of order.
- The front side flies open too soon. The glove and lead shoulder pull open before the front foot plants, and direction to the plate falls apart.
- Velocity lives in the bullpen, not the game. Fine mechanics with no batter, then rushing and leaking energy the moment it counts.
- Release point wanders. When segments fire out of order, the arm arrives at a slightly different spot each time, so command comes and goes.
None of these needs a radar gun or a slow-motion rig. Stand behind or beside the mound for a few pitches and watch whether the lower half or the upper half moves first. That one read tells you most of the story.
Why does poor sequencing happen?
Almost always, it is a lower half that isn't leading. Young pitchers feel power in their arm because that is the part they can feel, so they throw with it. The hips and legs are along for the ride instead of driving the bus. The arm then races ahead of a body that never set it up, and the timing collapses.
That also makes this an arm-health issue, not just a velocity one. When the lower half and torso skip their turn, the arm absorbs the load they were supposed to create. Fixing sequencing protects the arm and adds velocity at the same time, which is why it is worth chasing early. Anything mechanical is best confirmed with an in-person coach, and any arm pain should be seen by a physician before you keep throwing.

The pitcher runs a dry throw against the tension of a loop band held overhead. The band load forces the segments to fire in the right order to move against it, and it fights back the instant something jumps ahead. It is a clean feel drill for a pitcher who rushes or gets out of sequence, with no ball and no arm stress.

Using a med ball or water ball for resistance, the pitcher drives laterally to build explosive lower-half and side-to-side power. It trains the legs and core to lead the delivery and start the kinetic chain in the right order, all off the mound so the arm gets a break while the timing gets built.

A baseball is held at the hip during the throwing motion to give the pitcher an immediate read on what the lower half is doing. It exposes early hip rotation, rushing, and poor separation between the hips and shoulders, so a young pitcher can feel his sequencing instead of guessing at it.

When is it not sequencing?
Consistent velocity and clean timing but the ball still sails? That is likely direction to the plate or front-side control, not the firing order. Solid mechanics that fall apart only when he is gassed in the fifth inning? That is conditioning, not sequencing. If the front side opens early on every pitch even at slow speeds, start there first, because it can be its own fix.
